RADICULAR BACK PAIN CARE
Radicular low back pain – the
back pain that radiates down the leg – is often the most annoying.
Researchers observed that chiropractic spinal manipulative therapy
and benzodiazepine drugs were generally prescribed.
They asked how spinal manipulation affected
the use of the benzodiazepine drugs in patients aged 18-49 years of age.
The odds of receiving a prescription for a benzodiazepine were
significantly lower for those receiving
chiropractic spinal manipulation. The odds did go up a
bit as the back pain lingered: 3 months .56, 6 months
.61, and 12 months .67. The researchers also examined whether
a patient’s preference to avoid prescription medications influenced
this. Their sensitivity analysis didn’t have anything to do with
the risk. The study concluded that
chiropractic spinal manipulation care significantly decreased the
odds of a prescription for and influenced the use of
benzodiazepine for radicular low back pain. The patients in the study who started
with the chiropractic manipulation path were more apt to receive
published guideline-directed care for benzodiazepine prescription. (1) This is

OPIOID PRESCRIPTION FOR BACK PAIN
Back pain sufferers with acute onset, preliminary
episode of back pain commonly go to the emergency room for help.
Opioid prescribing in the ER was reported
as not always adhering to clinical guidelines which recommended
limited use. In 2016, researchers reported that prescribing
opioids so early for uncomplicated acute low
back pain increased the long-term use of opioids and the cost of care notwithstanding the fact that
there are a variety of adverse outcomes associated
with opioid use. (2) Auburn back pain sufferers who

RECOMMENDED BACK PAIN TREATMENT OPTIONS
The American College of Physicians published recommendations
for care of low back pain in 2009. (3) Spinal manipulation was a recommended
first-line treatment for low back pain in adults. Chiropractors make up
97%-98% of the spinal manipulation providers. (4) A 2021 follow-up report on whether these recommendations
were followed showed some interesting facts. A
Gallup poll of 5377 random people gave rise to 545 low back
pain sufferers who went to a medical doctor in
the past 12 months. They were asked what form of care
their medical doctor recommended and if they followed that care. 96% said they received a recommendation
of one or more pain treatments. 81% said their medical doctor recommended
drug and non-drug therapies. 76% - NSAIDs and acetaminophen. 79% - self-care
treatments. 37% - massage, acupuncture, or spinal manipulation. 60% - physical
therapy. Nearly 66% said prescriptions (benzodiazepine, opioids,
gabapentin, Neurontin, cortisone injections) were recommended.
Follow through on the recommendations by patients varied from 68%
for acupuncture to 94% for NSAIDs. (5) Dr. Le's Chiropractic & Wellness, L.L.C. deliveres
safe, gentle spinal manipulation as recommended by the guidelines and
encourages follow through with care.
